I grew up in a house that was a little healthier than most. Ok, maybe a lot. My dad created natural foods companies and we got to be the test kids for each of his new health food products. My mom raised four kids cooking everything from complete scratch. Field to table was the way we lived. It was awesome.
But it was also hard to keep up once I became an adult. With a career of my own, a family and all of the stresses you’re dealing with too, I struggled to stay as healthy as I had been growing up.
Meanwhile, I was going on TV and talking on stages in front of audiences around the globe sharing recipes, wellness tips, and trying to inspire others to live a healthier life. I was teaching about Fresh Living but secretly I was struggling and stumbling.
And then I made some discoveries that I’d love to share with you.
I discovered that breathing while eating actually helps you digest. I discovered that getting up earlier to make time for quiet before the family wakes makes a massive difference in a day. I learned which foods negatively effect me and which events trigger negative emotions; and then I learned how to avoid them.
I’d love to help you find the same balance that I have now. Through lifestyle choices, mindset management, stress solutions, and amazing health and diet practices, I can help you find your way to Refreshed Living too. Starting today.
HERE’S A FUN LITTLE WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE
1969: In a second floor apartment in Ann Arbor, MI, Eden Foods opens as a food co-op. By 1971 it is a successful distributor of Natural Foods. Tim Redmond and his new wife, Pattie, are two of the visionary pioneers helping to create what will become known around the world as the natural foods movement. This would prove to be one of the most defining factors in my life.
1976: I was born…but not in a hospital like most families. No way. It was a home birth, into the peace and comfort of my parent’s macrobiotic home.
My older brother, Nate, and I were immersed early into the world of natural foodies. From this point on our successes, failures and daily moods were said to stem from what we’d had for breakfast.
Around this time we started building our new “eco” home in the country outside of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Our home relied on solar energy plus a wood-burning stove to heat the house (there was no furnace and those Michigan winters are loooong!) and was surrounded by forests and endless organic gardens.
While other kids spent the 80s in technicolor leg warmers, my three siblings and I turned compost piles and weeded our organic veggie patches. We were acutely aware of the fact that we were a part of something big with dad on track to “save the world through healthier food.” I was ready to follow in his footsteps.
1994: I graduated from High School wondering if I’d be remembered as “most likely to succeed” or the one who ate seaweed as a kid.
Four years later I graduated from Butler University with two degrees under my belt and a flair for the dramatics. I dreamed of replacing Katie Couric one day.
With my sites set on being a morning news anchor but not wanting to start in Paducah, KY, I started instead as a commercial actress and freelance TV producer. I became the youngest female producer for ESPN’s prized “SportsCentury” series and earned my first two Emmy awards.
2002: Ryan and I pitched a (big) tent in my parents back yard and threw a wedding for our nearest and dearest. Soon after I landed my first morning anchor job in Indianapolis but left three years later exhausted by the 3am wake-up calls. I was ready to preach the benefits of healthy living to a bigger audience.
In 2005 I shot a pilot for a TV series that was about all the things I had learned growing up – natural foods, healthy homes and graceful living. The Discovery Networks picked it up and Living Fresh premiered the following year. I was called the Queen of Green and the Eco Martha Stewart. The next year my second Discovery series, Get Fresh with Sara Snow, premiered. I started traveling the globe highlighting people and products who were making healthy living accessible. This is when I started coaching, going into homes and highlighting changes individuals could make to start living fresh.
2008: I joined the Board of The Organic Center; a powerful non-profit organization at the forefront of the organic movement and started speaking at events and conferences across the country.
I also began hosting a regular segment for CNN.com called Living Green.
The next year my first book, Sara Snow’s Fresh Living hit shelves, and I co-hosted Big Green Lies for the Fine Living Channel, investigating common misconceptions within the world of green and natural living.
I began serving as spokesperson for numerous large brands (Reynolds, Clorox, Johnson & Johnson, Softlips, Physician’s Formula, and more) as they launched their own cleaner product lines and began their first forays into the natural products consumer space.
I joined the board of Vitamin Angels to help provide lifesaving nutrients to at-risk mothers and babies around the globe and welcomed our second baby girl into our new home in Los Angeles.
2015: Wanting a way to stay in touch with my audience I launched a YouTube cooking channel called ReFreshed with Sara Snow, showcasing quick and healthy recipes for any family.
The next year I helped launch Bambino, a babysitting app that has revolutionized the way parents find local sitters.
A few years later, as PTA mom at my daughters’ school (now on the East Coast) I inadvertently found myself studying today’s families. What I saw worried me, and still does: too much stress, anxiety and a general disconnect. I vowed to help do something about it.
I started a journey of becoming certified in every type of wellness coaching I could: health coaching, life coaching, family coaching, enneagram coaching and also as a certified natural health expert.
I launched Refreshed Living to help women and families find their way back to their truest, healthiest and happiest selves.
Like most women today, I wear multiple hats – that of mom, author, educator, teacher, speaker and more. But I wouldn’t change a thing. I adore the work I do – to teach simple and effective ways to live with wellness and health at heart.
