Safer Sunscreens for your Summer Sun!

Every year the EWG (Environmental Working Group) comes out with their list of best sunscreens.

..because of inadequate regulations governing the safety and efficacy of sunscreens...store shelves will be filled with sunscreen products that either offer inadequate production or use potentially hazardous ingredients, or both.
— The Environmental Working Group

Personally, I'm worried a little bit about inadequate protection but I'm worried a lot about putting unsafe ingredients on my skin or the skin of my children. As you know, your skin is your body's largest organ and as much as 60% of what you put on your skin is absorbed into your body.

Here are a few notes from the report worth repeating:

  • Avoid Oxybenzone: It's an allergenic, a potential endocrine disruptor, is absorbed in high amounts, and has been found in high levels in human breast milk, amniotic fluid and blood.

  • Avoid sunscreens making SPF claims above 50: They're likely bogus.

  • Avoid spray sunscreens: They pose an inhalation risk and may not provide adequate protection.

So what should you use?
There are plenty of sunscreens that are safe and effective!
Here are a few that I already know, use and love.

I LOVE the Coola Sun Silk Drops! It goes on like silk, even over makeup without any issue.

I'm a HUGE Drunk Elephant fan so I love this daily facial SPF.

This Alba sunscreen has been a family favorite for years. It smells great, it's Amazon available, and it's healthy and safe.

I don't always love a stick sunscreen but for kids it's a must and you can't go wrong with California Baby.

I've loved Badger for years, too!

Babo is a great brand that I love as well.
