Here is a simple list of beauty product ingredients you’re better off avoiding, from National Geographic’s Green Guide.

1. Anti-bacterial: kills all bacteria including beneficial species, overuse may reduce the body’s natural defenses
2. Coal tar: found in dandruff shampoos and anti-itch creams, this is a hormone disruptor and known carcinogen
3. Diethanolamine (DEA): found in shampoos, it is a hormone disruptor and possible carcinogen
4. 1,4 Dioxane: known animal carcinogen, and possible human carcinogen found in shampoo and body wash
5. Formaldehyde: risk of immune system toxicity, respiratory irritation, and cancer. Found in nail polish, eyelash adhesive, and hair dyes
6. Fragrance: this term allows the beauty industry to keep their chemical formulations secret. Many fragrance formulas have phthalates (a hormone disruptor) added.
7. Lead and mercury- found in men’s hair dye and some toothpaste. Hydrated silica can be found in some toothpastes, which is a neurotoxic lead.
8. Nanoparticles- found in sunscreen, it penetrates skin and can damage brain cells
9. Parabens- these are used a preservative in many beauty products. Parabens have estrogenic effects and have even been banned by the European Union because of carcinogenic effects.
10. Petroleum distillates: found in mascara and foot-odor powder. Also banned by the European Union due to carcinogenic effects.
11. P-Phenylenediamine (PPD): found in hair dyes. Can damage the nervous system, cause lung irritation, severe allergic reactions, and blindness.
