Life is always throwing us curveballs. Whether we expect the changes or we are surprised by the latest detour, dealing with these shifts can be challenging. Try one of these five anti-anxiety rituals next time you’re feeling discomfort.

1. Deep Breathing

Just as if you were lying in savasana on your yoga mat, gently bring your attention back to the breath. Inhale deeply, pause, and exhale out the nose. Focus on making the exhale longer than your inhale for relaxation. Feel the diaphragm gently lift as you inhale and the ribs squeeze in as you exhale. Breathe deeply for at least ten breaths before returning to your natural rhythm.

2. Decaf Herbal Tea

Brew a cup of hot tea and find a quiet space to enjoy it. Use all five senses to really capture the experience. The amino acid L-theanine found in tea plants is said to counteract the effects of caffeine stimulation. This calming effect is perfect for relieving anxiety.

3. Talk it Out

Sometimes the best remedy is talking it out with a trusted friend. Choose someone that you know will nod and listen intently without judging or giving advice. Although we may think advice is “needed”, during times of anxiety, all the “should-do’s” can just create more tension. Can’t think of a friend who fits the description? A loving pet can be the perfect alternative.

4. Exercise

A physical relief, exercise is one of the fastest ways to relieve anxiety and to keep it away. The release of endorphins helps to trigger positive feelings and offers a natural high to ease your worries. Both cardiovascular workouts and strength training offer benefits.

5. Repeat a Mantra

Mantras are very helpful in creating new thought patterns. When we repeat a positive mantra we literally retrain our minds to think more positively. You can tailor your mantra based on the issue you are working through. Here’s a great mantra for everyday use: “I breathe in love, I let go of fear”.
